What it does: opens things. Blister packs, mail, seed packets, tape on a parcel, the plastic ring on a bottle — the small daily obstacles that a big knife is too much for.
Buying it as a gift
Most of these leave the workshop as presents, and the reason is that they are unmistakably handmade and completely unintimidating. Somebody who would never carry a folding knife will carry this one. Real pattern welding at a small scale
The blade is only 1.5 inches long, yet the billet it came from was folded and welded as many times as one destined for a chef knife. That is why the pattern on a knife this small is as tight and busy as it is — the layers are the same thickness, so there are simply more of them per inch of steel visible. Two ounces on a keyring
The knife weighs two ounces, which is roughly a set of car keys. It does not pull a pocket out of shape and it does not press on your leg when you sit. The same design in a darker handle is the black-scaled Tsetse Fly if the color is wrong for the recipient.
Care: Carbon Damascus in a pocket needs a wipe more often than a knife in a drawer does. Dry it after cutting anything damp, and put a thin film of oil on the blade every few weeks. A single drop at the pivot stops the action getting gritty. The scales are a sealed, non-porous material: soap and water clean them, and abrasive pads will dull the shine permanently.
FAQs
Is it sharp enough to be useful? It arrives shaving sharp. The limitation is the length of the edge, not the keenness of it.
Does it lock open? Yes. Push it open until the lock seats and check it before cutting toward yourself.
Can it be engraved? There is very little flat surface on a knife this size, so engraving works better on the leather sheath than on the knife itself.
Will the color match the photograph exactly? Close, but not identical. Each pair of scales is cut from a different part of the block, so the swirl and the depth of tone shift a little between knives.
