Reading the handle
Copper wraps the bolster and the butt, with rosewood and shell alternating between them. The copper is polished at the factory and will not stay that way; skin contact turns it a warm brown inside a season. If you prefer it bright, a metal polish and thirty seconds brings it back, and it will do that indefinitely because the color change is only on the surface.
Why stainless suits a folder
Folders spend their lives closed, which traps whatever moisture was on the blade against the liners where you cannot see it. That is the exact condition carbon steel hates. Sharpening a small stainless blade
Three inches is not much steel, so a coarse stone removes more of the blade’s life than it needs to. Start with a fine stone or a ceramic rod, and only drop to coarse if the edge is actually damaged. Four stripes, and how they are set
Each shell band is cut, ground to thickness, then bedded into a milled recess in the rosewood and sanded back level with the wood on either side. That flush finish is the part that takes the labor. Set proud, shell catches and chips within a week of pocket carry; set flush, the wood takes every knock and the shell never sees one.
Care: the blade needs almost nothing beyond a wipe. The handle is the part that wants attention. Keep it out of prolonged sun, wipe the copper if you want it bright, and put a little oil on the rosewood twice a year. Never soak the knife; water sitting in the pivot will eventually seep behind the shell.
FAQs
Will the copper turn my pocket green? No. Patina is a surface film and does not transfer to fabric in normal carry.
Is the pearl shell real? Yes, cut shell rather than resin. That is why the color moves when you tilt it.
How thick is it in a pocket? It is a handle-heavy folder, around four inches closed, and it sits better in a front pocket than a shirt pocket.
