Pick this up when: you want a pocket knife that reads as jewelry until you use it. Opening mail, cutting cigar caps, trimming a thread at a wedding. It handles ordinary tasks fine; it just looks like it should not have to.
Snake wood is the whole reason for the price
Snake wood is one of the densest timbers used for knife handles and one of the most expensive by weight. The dark flecking is natural figure, not a stain. It is also brittle for a wood, and it checks if it dries out, which is why these scales are cut thin and sealed. Keep it out of a hot car and away from a radiator and it will outlive you. That density is also why it feels colder in the hand than the walnut or padauk on our other folders.
The blade shape, and what it is not for
This is a narrow spear-ish point with very little belly. It excels at pushing into things and at fine slicing. It is bad at scooping, bad at spreading, and the thin tip is the part most likely to break if you use the knife as a screwdriver. Do not. Our page on Damascus pattern types explains the banding you see running the length of it.
Five point two ounces and a clip
Light for a knife with steel bolsters at both ends, because the wood is doing the middle. The clip is a plain milled bar rather than a sprung wire, so it holds firmly on a jeans pocket and less well on a thin suit lining. If you are unsure whether the layered steel is real, the tests in telling real Damascus from a printed pattern apply to this blade as much as any other. A stonewashed D2 karambit sits at the opposite end of the same catalog.
What it needs from you: almost nothing, done regularly. A dry cloth after handling, a drop of oil in the pivot each season, and a thin coat of renaissance wax or hard furniture wax on the snake wood once a year. Never soak it. Water in the scale-to-bolster joint is the one thing that will spoil this knife.
FAQs
Is every handle the same color? No. Snake wood ranges from red-brown to nearly black and the flecking varies piece to piece.
Can it be engraved? The bolsters can take light laser marking. The wood cannot be engraved cleanly.
How does the blade lock? Liner lock, with a thumb stud for one-handed opening.
