Carry it for: daily pocket duty — parcels, rope, tape, food at a desk — where five ounces is light enough to forget and long enough in the handle to fill an adult hand.

Five ounces changes how you use it

At five ounces this sits low in a pocket and does not swing when you walk. That matters more than it sounds. A heavy folder gets left at home and a light one gets used, and a knife you actually carry beats a better knife in a drawer. The handle measures four inches, so your whole hand lands on it rather than three fingers and a thumb. Weight is the specification most buyers skip past and most owners end up caring about.

Wenge and what it does over the years

Wenge is a dense, open-grained African hardwood, almost black when new. Handled daily it lightens slightly and the open pores fill with oil from your skin, which is why old wenge looks glossy in the middle and matte at the ends. It does not swell like softer woods. It will splinter along the grain if you drop the knife on concrete, so treat the scales as the fragile part.

The file-work is not just decoration

The brass work along the spine gives your thumb something to sit against when you push down through a taped box. It also traps dirt. Run a toothbrush along it when you clean the knife. For a folder with a slightly longer blade and a different handle feel, compare it against the Dugite pocket knife.

Care: Carbon steel and wood want opposite things, so keep water away from both. Dry the blade, then wipe the scales with the same cloth. Once a season put a little oil on the wenge as well as the pivot — a light mineral or camellia oil suits both. We compare the options in our note on which oil to use on a knife.

FAQs

How sharp does it arrive? Sharp enough to shave paper on arrival. It is hand finished, so the very tip of the edge can vary by a hair from knife to knife.

What angle should I sharpen it to? Match what is already there rather than picking a number. Our page on pocket knife bevels explains how to read the existing grind.

Will the wood darken? It lightens rather than darkens with handling, and the surface gains a low shine. Neither is a fault.

Is there a pocket clip? No. This one rides loose in a pocket or sits in the sheath on a belt, which is part of why it lies flatter than a clipped folder does.

Built on a bench in Tennessee. Engraving is optional; the warranty is not, and it runs for as long as you own it.

The handle area is way to thick for my liking . Love the Damascus blade but doesn’t seem to be very sharp , and I believe I had it “professionally” sharpened . I like the CRKT knife that I ordered at the same time and received a week earlier the this black momba alot better . And that sucks as I have a custom knife idea I was gonna see about you guys making and now I’m not sure …. 😕
