Description

Five ounces, six and a half inches open, and a materials list that reads like a jeweler’s order: mokume bolsters, antique animal tooth, a set ruby and a white diamond. The Zeus sits at the ornamental end of what a pocket knife can be and still be carried.

Built for: collectors, and for the buyer marking something. A retirement, an anniversary, a milestone a plain knife would undersell. It cuts perfectly well, but that is not why most people own one.

Five ounces in a pocket

The weight is worth thinking about before you order. Five ounces is roughly double a slim modern folder of the same blade length, because bolsters and inlay work are dense. In a jacket pocket you will not notice it. In the front pocket of thin trousers you will, all day. Buyers who want this knife on them constantly usually end up carrying it in a coat or a bag instead.

What you are paying for

Not the steel. The billet listed above costs what it costs and appears across the whole catalogue at every price point. The premium here is bench hours: setting stones, fitting inlay, finishing bolsters until the seams disappear. That is a different kind of value from edge performance, and it holds or loses money for different reasons. What a real Damascus knife costs breaks down where the money actually goes, and whether Damascus is worth it takes the skeptic’s side of the argument.

Looking after the stones and the steel

Care: think of it as two objects. The blade is high-carbon, so dry it, oil it lightly and never put it away damp. The handle is a mixed assembly of metal, tooth and set stones, and it wants nothing but a dry cloth. Keep solvents, silver dip and ultrasonic cleaners away from it entirely, because those loosen settings and strip the patina that makes mokume worth having. Antique tooth is old organic material, and extreme dryness or direct heat can shrink it away from its setting, so a drawer beats a sunny shelf.

FAQs

Should I carry it or keep it? Carrying will mark the bolsters within weeks. Neither answer is wrong, but decide before the first scratch rather than after it.

Are the stones real? They are set as the listing describes. Ask before ordering if you need documentation for insurance.

Is there a plainer knife with the same steel? Yes. The same forged billet goes into far simpler frames, including a Damascus stiletto if you want the pattern without the ornament.

  1. Matt Patterson (store manager)

Not many things look like the sample picture but this knife came exactly as displayed if not looking even better in person. It is razor sharp and locks up tight. The bone handle material was a pleasant surprise and really stands out. The customer service is also excellent with helping me have an engraving put on it. Would highly recommend.
