A good match for: a first serious folder. It is 8 inches open and 5.5 oz, which is the size most people actually reach for once the novelty of a very large knife wears off. The G10 is textured rather than glossy and holds on to a wet hand. Nothing about it is fragile.

Care: the brass liners are exposed along the belly of the handle and will darken to a warm brown with handling; leave them or bring them back with a cloth and metal polish, avoiding the blade. The G10 scales need nothing at all. The forged steel is the one part that can corrode, and because this is a knife that gets used rather than displayed, get in the habit of a wipe and a drop of oil at the end of the week rather than a rescue job at the end of the year.

Brass liners and filework

The liners are the internal frames that carry the pivot and the lock. Leaving a strip of them exposed along the handle spine and cutting a pattern into it is old pocket knife practice, and it is done with a file by hand rather than machined. It is the sort of work that adds an hour to a knife and cannot be faked with a stamp. Brass was chosen over steel liners here for a practical reason as well as a visual one: it is easier to file cleanly, it will not rust where it is exposed along the spine, and it wears against the blade tang more kindly over a very long service life.

Rust, if it happens

Carbon steel forgives almost everything except being stored wet. If you get orange spotting, it comes off with a fine abrasive and oil without hurting the pattern, because the pattern is structural and goes through the steel. How to remove rust from a knife walks through it without exaggerating the danger.

Checking that Damascus is genuine

The scattered rings on this blade change where the grind cuts through them, and they continue onto the bolsters. Printed patterns do neither. Our guide to spotting a printed imitation shows the giveaways. For the same steel in a completely different shape, the Damascus fish fillet knife is thin, flexible and ground for a job this knife would be wrong for.

This was an anniversary gift for my husband. We watch a popular show that features Damascus bladesmithing so he was tickled to receive this knife. I was pleased with the overall craftsmanship and very happy to find an American made product reasonably priced. We support small businesses whenever possible too.
