Built for: giving. This is the piece people buy for an anniversary or a groomsman and then keep in a case, and the specification is honest about that. A double-edged seven-inch blade has no job list.

Turquoise on a handle is a real stone problem

Turquoise rates around five to six on the Mohs scale. Quartz, which is most of what household dust is made from, rates seven. Everyday dust will therefore scratch it, and you should never wipe this handle with a cloth you have used on anything else. Turquoise also absorbs oils, so skin contact deepens the color over years. Some owners like that. If you want a stone that stays exactly as it arrived, this is not the material.

The wood and the stone age apart

Rosewood darkens and gains depth. Turquoise shifts, sometimes greener, sometimes duller, depending on what it has been in contact with. Ten years in, the contrast between the two will be softer than it is on the day it arrives. Whether you call that patina or degradation is a matter of taste, but it is worth knowing before buying a knife largely for how it looks.

Personalization, and what it does to resale

Engraving a name or a date onto the blade makes the knife specific to one person, which is the point of a gift. It also makes it close to unsellable later. If there is any chance the recipient would want to trade it on, put the inscription on the sheath instead of the steel.

Care: the pattern-welded blade is high-carbon and unforgiving of neglect. A light oil after every handling, and out of the sheath in storage. Do not reach for a household metal polish, because the etch that reveals the pattern is shallow and polish will wash the contrast straight out of it. For the handle, one soft dry cloth and nothing else. No oils on the turquoise, no solvents anywhere near it. How much does the turquoise vary between knives? A great deal. Expect a family resemblance to the photographs rather than a match, because the veining and the depth of blue change from one handle to the next.

Is it safe to hand around at a party? It is sharpened on both edges with no thumb ramp anywhere along the spine. Treat it the way you would an open razor and brief anyone you pass it to.
