Meant for: anglers and small game hunters. The upswept belly is cut for skinning strokes and for running a fillet along a rib cage, and the point is fine enough to open a body cavity without tearing into what is underneath.

Why 440C for a wet knife

This knife spends its life around water, blood and salt, which is exactly where carbon steel fails you. 440C is a genuine stainless with enough carbon to harden properly, so it takes a real edge and then survives being wiped down instead of oiled. It is not the hardest steel we sell and it will not hold an edge as long as D2. What it will do is come back to sharp in a couple of minutes on a fine stone, which matters far more when you are working through several fish in a morning. The 440C steel guide goes into the metallurgy.

The weight is the trade

Nine ounces is heavy for a four and a half inch blade. That mass helps when you are pushing through cartilage or a joint, and it hurts after an hour of fine work, because your wrist carries it the whole time. If your hands tire easily, or if most of your cutting is delicate, this is the wrong shape and you would be better served by something lighter. The skinning knife guide explains where belly helps and where it gets in the way.

Handle and care

The green scales are pinned rather than glued, with brass showing at the pin heads. Water will not lift them, and they clean up under a tap. Rinse the whole knife in fresh water after saltwater use, including the seam where scale meets tang, because that seam is the one place salt likes to sit. Dry it, and it needs nothing else. For a smaller skinner in the same working spirit, the Pine Cone skinner gives up length for control.

Questions we get

Can it go in a dishwasher? No. Stainless survives it; the handle and the sheath do not.

Is the sheath wet rated? It is leather, so it handles splashes and dries out fine, but do not store the knife in it soaked. Leather holds moisture against steel.

Why the fine point on a skinner? Because opening a fish or a small carcass needs a tip that starts a cut without pushing. The belly behind it then does the long work.
