Twelve ounces over thirteen inches puts this one firmly in chopper territory, and the brass double guard is there because at that mass your hand will try to move forward.

Handle Stabilized burl wood, dark green and gold, with a brass guard

Bought by: hunters who want one big fixed blade for camp rather than a specialist. It splits kindling, breaks down a carcass, and does the rough kitchen work at a hunting cabin. It is not subtle and it does not pretend to be.

The clip point, and what the weight buys

Eight inches of clip point with a long belly means the cutting edge sweeps rather than pushes. Draw it through hide and the curve does the work with barely any pressure from you. The clip thins the last two inches so the tip still penetrates cleanly despite the overall bulk. Twelve ounces decides how it feels: every cut carries momentum, so you use less arm on tough material, and precision work tires you fast. Trimming silverskin with this is possible and unpleasant.

Stabilized burl in the hand

The handle is stabilized wood — burl that has been vacuum-impregnated with resin and cured hard, so the figure stays visible while the wood itself stops behaving like wood. Stabilized blanks do not swell when wet, shrink in a dry cabin, or stain from blood the way oiled walnut will. The dark green and gold figure comes from burl grain meeting the resin dye, so no two handles match and yours will differ from what you see. Heat is the one risk: a dashboard in July can soften the resin.

The brass fittings

Brass guard, brass butt cap. Both will dull to a warm dark gold over a few months of handling, and both come back bright with any household metal polish and thirty seconds of effort. The functional point is the guard: with a blade this heavy, a wet grip that slips forward meets brass rather than edge. That is worth more than the way it looks.

Care for a big carbon blade

The larger the blade, the more surface there is to look after. Wipe it down after every use and pay attention to the ricasso and the shoulder against the guard, where moisture collects and where rust starts on almost every fixed blade we ever see returned. A thin coat of oil across the flats is enough between uses; our note on which oil to use covers what is safe if the knife also touches food. Do not leave it sheathed for months. Sharpen the belly and the straight section separately, following the curve rather than dragging the whole edge across a stone in one pass. For the broad drop point version of this same platform, see the Redback at twelve inches.

Questions buyers ask

Can it chop wood? Yes, within reason. Wrist-thick branches, not felling. See our Damascus hunting knife guide for where a big bowie stops being the right tool.

Is the sheath belt-mounted? Yes — stitched leather, with a snap retention strap and a belt loop.

Will the pattern show through blood staining? Blood will darken the etch temporarily. Warm water and a cloth restores it; it does not damage the pattern.
