Plain walnut, a brass clip guard, and no gemstones anywhere. The Pseudonaja Textilis is the working member of the snake series, and it costs less than its relatives because the money went into the blade rather than the handle stack.

The guard is the feature

A clip guard is the small brass finger that projects below the blade at the front of the handle. It exists for one reason: to stop your hand running forward onto the edge when the point hits bone and the knife stops but you do not. Anyone who has been cut that way buys guarded knives afterward. It also gives you a positive index point in the dark or with cold hands, so you know which way the edge is facing without looking. The cost is that a guard makes the knife awkward to choke up on for fine work, and it snags going into a sheath if you are careless.

Bought by: hunters who want a guard, campers, and anyone buying a first serious fixed blade. Under seven ounces on a nine-inch knife means it is quick in the hand rather than heavy, and it hangs on a belt without dragging.

Grind and geometry

Just under five inches of edge with a shallow belly and a fine tip. That combination favors control over brute force: it will punch a starting hole, follow a seam, and take long clean strokes down a hide, but it does not have the mass to chop and it should not be pried with. The tip is the part to respect. Thin points cut beautifully and snap if you lever with them. If bevels are unfamiliar territory, fixed blade bevels explained shows what to look for when you sharpen.

Its routine: two materials, two habits. The pattern-welded blade gets dried, oiled and left to grey. The brass guard is the piece people get wrong — brass tarnishes, always, and a dulled brass guard is not a defect. You can polish it bright with a metal polish, or leave it, but do not use that polish on the blade, because the compound is abrasive enough to blur the etched pattern. Walnut is stable and undemanding; a wipe of oil once a year is generous. Do not store the knife inside the leather.

Questions before ordering

What oil should I use? Anything light and food-safe. Which oil to use on a knife compares the usual candidates.

Is it razor sharp out of the box? It ships with a working edge that cuts paper cleanly.

Something in a completely different shape? The Octopus Damascus karambit is a curved, ringed blade that works nothing like this one.
