Who reaches for it: anyone who has ruined a hide with too much knife. A short, deep-bellied skinner is worked with the wrist, not the arm, and it lets you keep the edge riding along the membrane instead of dropping into the meat. On deer and hog it separates hide cleanly. On birds and small game it is one of the few knives that does not feel absurd.

What the belly does

Almost the whole edge on this blade is curve. That curve is what does skinning work: it keeps a long section of steel in contact with the seam as you sweep, so you cut continuously rather than in short bites. The trade is that there is very little straight edge left. Push cuts, whittling a stake, cutting a cord flat on a tailgate — all of it is clumsy on a blade shaped like this. It is a specialist, and it repays being treated as one. The skinning knife guide explains how the sweep is meant to be used.

The small handle is a real constraint

A short handle gives you control and takes away leverage. If you have large hands, or you wear gloves in cold weather, you will find the grip cramped and you will not be able to put much force behind it. That is a genuine reason to buy something else. Anyone who needs to break a pelvis or work through a joint should be reaching for a full-size fixed blade like the seven-inch Dragon hunting knife instead, and keeping this one for the finish work.

Field care for carbon steel

Blood is acidic and it etches carbon steel within hours. That is the single most important thing to know about owning this knife. Wipe it down before you drive home, not after. Warm water and a rag clear the worst of it; anything dried on wants a nylon brush rather than steel wool. Once it is dry, a smear of oil on the blade before it goes in the drawer is enough for a whole off-season. Do not leave it sheathed and damp overnight. Read up on how blade shapes affect edge care if you are choosing between profiles.

Questions worth asking

Is it full tang? Yes. The steel runs the length of the handle.

Will it gut as well as skin? It will, but carefully. There is no gut hook and the point is fine enough to nick an intestine if you rush.

Can it be carried on a belt? Yes, the leather sheath is included and takes a standard belt.
