Written for: hunters who break down their own game, and collectors who want visible hand work on the shelf. A 4.5 inch blade on a 9.5 inch knife gives a long, sweeping belly, and that curve is what keeps a skinning stroke moving instead of stalling. At 8.8 ounces it has real momentum behind it.
What 352 layers looks like
The billet is folded from 1095 and 15N20 until the count reaches 352, then twisted and manipulated into the wind and mix twist fire pattern before grinding. Acid etching darkens the 1095 and leaves the 15N20 bright, which is why the figure reads with depth rather than sitting flat on the surface. No two blades finish the same. What 352 layers means explains why the number matters less than the forging behind it.
Rose wood and brass file work
Rose wood is dense and naturally oily, which is why it has been used for tool handles for centuries. It takes a polish, resists moisture and does not turn slick in a wet hand. The brass file work along the spine is cut by hand, one notch at a time, and it is the detail that tells you a person made this and not a machine.
Care, and this one does need it
Both steels in this blade are high carbon, so it will rust if you let it. Dry it straight away after any contact with water, blood or acidic food. Once a month, work a light film of mineral oil over both flats and leave it to sit. Never store it inside the leather sheath, because tanning chemicals and trapped damp are the quickest way to ruin a pattern welded blade. If the etch starts to fade after a lot of sharpening, that is expected, and Damascus care and sharpening covers bringing the contrast back.
Questions
Is the pattern forged or printed? Forged. It is welded up from two steels and etched, so the figure runs through the blade instead of sitting on top of it.
Will it rust? If neglected, yes. That is the price of the pattern and the edge that comes with it.
What if I want something I can ignore? A 440C stag handled hunter is the low maintenance answer at a similar size.
Is a sheath included? Yes, leather, stitched by hand to fit this blade.
Can it be engraved? Yes, arranged at checkout before the knife leaves us.
Forged, ground and finished in Memphis, Tennessee. Our lifetime cover applies to defects in the knife itself.
