Description

Hold the Pearl Lily under a lamp and rotate it slowly. The handle does not have one color; it has a dozen, sliding from pink to green to pale gold as the angle changes, because pearl material is built from microscopic layers that split light instead of simply reflecting it. Photographs flatten this badly. In person it is the first thing anyone comments on.

The grip is assembled in segments rather than as two plain slabs, with warm copper-toned spacers separating the sections and copper pins set through the scales. The result is a striped, jewellery-like handle that still fills the palm properly and does not slip when your hands are damp.

Damascus, forged and etched

The blade is folded steel, drawn out through many cycles under the hammer and etched to reveal the pattern. On this one the layering runs in fine ripples along the grind with tighter figuring near the tip. Because the layers are the material itself, sharpening never removes them; a new bevel simply exposes a new slice of the same structure. Our short guide to the parts of a knife is useful if you are new to terms like ricasso, choil and tang.

A drop point, and why it suits this size

The spine curves down gradually to meet the edge, putting the tip roughly in line with the center of the blade. That geometry gives you a strong point that will not roll over under pressure, plus enough belly to slice cleanly. On a three-and-a-quarter inch blade it is about as versatile as a fixed profile gets, equally at home opening a box, portioning fruit or trimming a stem.

The grind is taken thin behind the edge and left with a hand-rubbed transition into the flats, so the knife wedges less than its thickness suggests.

Weight and balance

At just over seven inches overall the knife carries most of its mass in the handle, which is what the segmented construction and the metal spacers do for it. The balance point falls just behind the finger guard, so the blade feels light at the tip and the knife stays under control during fine work. Held in a pinch grip it behaves like a much smaller paring knife; held in a full fist it has enough handle to be secure.

Sheath, box and origin

Every part of this knife was made in Memphis, Tennessee, by a small crew who each own the piece they are working on from start to finish. The white leather sheath is cut from a single hide, formed damp around the blade and saddle-stitched by hand. It arrives boxed and ready to hand to somebody.

Keeping it right

Two rules cover almost everything. First, moisture is the enemy of patterned carbon steel, so dry the blade whenever it has been wet and never store it damp. Second, pearl and shell dislike heat and harsh chemicals; warm water and a soft cloth are enough, and solvents will haze the surface permanently. A light film of oil before a long spell in a drawer will keep the etch crisp, and our Damascus care and sharpening notes go further. If you like this material on a folding frame, the Golden Nacre pairs pearl with brass hardware.

This is hands down one of the best knives I’ve bought online. Not my first order from Black Mamba Knives and it won’t be my last. Leather sheath is thick and well stitched. Not the cheap stuff you usually get. Great buy overall.

Can’t stop showing this off to everyone who comes over. Blade geometry makes it glide through cuts with barely any effort. This is exactly why I keep coming back to this seller. Black Mamba Knives has earned a repeat customer with this one.

Bought this on a whim and it turned out to be one of my favorite purchases in a long time. Handle feels amazing and the balance is perfect. Even the small details in the damascus pattern are crisp and clean. I keep coming back to Black Mamba Knives because it’s always this good. So worth it.

Wasn’t sure what to expect but this knife nailed it. This is my third order from Black Mamba Knives and they never disappoint. Blade holds a razor edge right out of the box. Worth every penny.
