Description

Bone, turquoise and pattern-welded steel

There is a reason this combination has followed Southwestern knifemaking for a century: white bone reads bright and clean, turquoise gives it one strong note of color, and copper warms the whole thing up. The Turquoise Dawn puts all three together on a compact working knife rather than a display piece, and the balance lands just forward of the pins so it feels lively rather than nose-heavy.

The handle scales are pure white buffalo bone, hand-shaped with a subtle finger contour underneath and a palm swell toward the butt. A band of turquoise sits at the front where your index finger lands, and rose-toned copper pins pick the color up again further back. Bone takes handling well; it warms in the hand within seconds and it will develop a faint patina over years rather than looking worn out.

The steel

This blade came off the hammer as a stack of alternating alloys, folded and re-drawn until the count runs into the hundreds of layers, then etched so the difference between them shows as flowing wave figure across the grind. Those bands are not a coating. Cut the blade in half and the same pattern would run through the cross section. We explain what layer counts do and do not mean in our note on what a layer count actually tells you.

The profile is a drop point with a deep belly, ground thin and finished with a small sharpening notch where the edge meets the ricasso so the bevel can be taken all the way back without a stubborn heel forming. It skins, it slices, it preps, it opens boxes.

Full tang, one piece

The steel runs unbroken from tip to butt, visible as a dark spine line between the scales. Nothing about this knife relies on adhesive to stay together, which is the difference between a tool that survives a decade of use and one that loosens. If the distinction is new to you, this comparison of tang types covers it in a couple of minutes.

Who it suits

This is a knife for someone who wants forged steel without a heavy hunter in their hand. Overall it runs seven inches with a three-and-a-quarter inch blade, which is comfortable for camp cooking, garden work, light game and everyday cutting. It is also a common choice as a gift, because the materials photograph well and the size does not intimidate a first-time owner.

Made on our own bench

The billet was forged, folded and drawn out in our Memphis, Tennessee shop. From there the blade was profiled, ground, hardened, tempered, etched and sharpened without leaving the building, and the bone and turquoise were fitted at the same bench. One pair of hands sees the knife from bar stock to final edge.

Sheath and upkeep

The included sheath is white leather stitched in turquoise thread to echo the handle, wet-formed to this exact blade and finished by hand in our Memphis shop.

Carbon-rich pattern steel wants to stay dry. Towel the blade after use, especially after citrus or salt, and give it a thin protective film if it is going into storage. Bone asks for nothing more than the occasional wipe; avoid soaking it and avoid the dishwasher, as sustained heat can shrink and check natural material. Its folding counterpart, the Alpine Turquoise, carries the same materials in a pocket frame.

Feels way more premium than the price suggests. Every piece of the fit and finish looks hand checked before it shipped. Fit and finish is museum quality.
