Everyday use: the small jobs that a big knife makes awkward. Opening packages, cutting cord, trimming, food prep at a campsite, taking the skin off an apple. It is a fixed blade, so there is no pivot to get gritty and nothing to fail, and at seven inches overall it disappears on a belt.

The raindrop pattern reads best at this size

On a short blade the eyes of a raindrop pattern land close together, and because the flat is narrow you see the full arc of each ring instead of a cross-section of it. The pattern is denser here than the same billet would look drawn out over seven inches. It runs onto the ricasso and stops where the handle scales begin.

Rosewood is the right density for a small handle

A four-inch handle has no room to be forgiving, so it has to fill the hand with shape rather than volume. Rosewood is dense and heavy enough to give a small knife some presence, hard enough that the palm swell holds its contour through years of handling, and oily enough in the grain that it resists water without a heavy finish sitting on top. The scales are pinned in steel through a full tang, with a brass-lined lanyard hole at the butt.

Fixed blade at a folder’s size

Most people reach for a folder at this size because a fixed blade this small seems like a compromise. It is the opposite. There is no lock to trust and no play to develop, and the whole blade is available for cutting rather than half of it living inside a handle.

Care: a knife this size gets used constantly and cleaned rarely, which is exactly how carbon Damascus gets ruined. Make a habit of drying it the moment you finish cutting, not when you get home. The brass lanyard collar will darken with skin contact and needs nothing done about it. Rosewood benefits from a little oil rubbed into the scales once or twice a year — any food-safe oil, worked in and wiped off. Do not put this knife in a dishwasher, ever, and do not store it in the leather sheath.

Questions about this knife

Is the tang full width? Yes, the tang runs the length of the handle between the scales and is pinned through.

Is it a kitchen knife or a belt knife? Both, honestly, though it is better at camp cooking than at a cutting board because the handle is a grip handle rather than a pinch-grip handle. choosing an everyday carry knife is a good place to work out which you need.

Why a drop point? Strong tip, useful belly and no snag. the common blade shapes sets out the alternatives. If you would rather it folded, the Taipan Damascus pocket knife has a similar blade on a pivot.
