Written for: the buyer comparing a handmade balisong against a mass-produced one at a similar price and trying to work out where the money actually goes. The short answer is the pivots and the fit, not the decoration.

What you do not give up at this price

The blade is the same D2 we put in knives at twice this figure, heat treated on the same schedule, ground on the same jigs. The pivots are fitted and tested by hand before the knife is boxed. What you are not paying for is engraving, exotic handle material, and a long finishing process on the flats that no flipper ever notices. That is the whole difference, and for a knife that gets handled rather than displayed it is the right place to take the money out.

How D2 behaves on an edge

D2 has large carbides, which is both the reason it holds an edge so long and the reason it resists taking a true razor finish. Left with some tooth on it, the edge cuts rope and cardboard superbly. Polished to a mirror it will not quite match a fine-grained steel, and it loses that polish faster than it loses a working edge. Sharpen for tooth rather than for shaving and the steel plays to its strengths instead of against them.

Sharpening it

Use diamond or ceramic. A soft natural stone will burnish D2 rather than cut it, and you will spend twenty minutes making the edge worse than it started. A few passes on a fine rod restores a working edge long before you need to go back to a stone at all.

Care

Semi-stainless, so it tolerates neglect better than a carbon blade but not indefinitely. Dry it after handling, and put a light oil on it if the knife is going away for a season. The bone panels need nothing but a wipe and no soaking. Check the pivot screws after heavy sessions and take up any play gradually rather than all at once.

Questions we get

Where does D2 sit against everything else? Our knife steel chart puts the numbers side by side.

Do I need to sharpen it or just hone it? Mostly the latter — honing versus sharpening explains the difference.

What is the wood-handled version? The BMK-469 D2 balisong swaps bone for wood at a similar price.
