Why D2 on a flipper

D2 carries around twelve percent chromium, which puts it just under the stainless line. In practice it shrugs off a warm pocket and takes a long while to go dull, but it will spot if you put it away wet. On a knife that spends its life being handled rather than cutting, that is usually the trade you want. It is also stubborn on a stone, so buy diamond or ceramic and skip the soft natural stones entirely.

Handles and the way it closes

Stainless handles carry more mass than titanium or aluminum, so this one closes with weight behind it instead of snapping shut. The bone panels sit flush in the channels, which keeps the inside faces clean and stops an edge of color catching your thumb halfway through a rollover. Flush-set panels also mean there is no lip for grit to collect behind, which is where most balisongs start feeling gritty after a few months.

The dyed bone

Bone takes dye because it is porous, and it takes it unevenly because its density varies across a single panel. That is why the color sits in the grain rather than on top of it and why it cannot chip off the way a coating can. No two panels come out identical, so expect yours to differ from the ones we shot.

Wipe the blade after a session. Skin oil is what starts the spotting on D2, not water. A drop at each pivot every few weeks keeps both handles falling at the same rate. Bone is porous, so keep it away from solvents and dishwater and dry it with a cloth rather than heat. It will deepen a shade over years of handling, which is the only aging this knife does.
