Suits: a flipper who values edge retention over easy sharpening, and who likes warm bone against bright steel. Assembled by hand, so no two handles carry quite the same figure.
What D2 actually changes
D2 carries enough chromium to slow corrosion noticeably without ever qualifying as stainless. The practical result is a blade that keeps a working edge far longer than a plain carbon blade and then argues with you when you finally sit down to sharpen it. Budget real time on a coarse stone. In exchange, the edge you raise lasts. If you have never worked a high carbide steel before, how D2 compares against other steels is worth reading first.
Bone in a steel frame
Bone is softer than the bolsters around it, which is deliberate. It gives your fingers something with texture and a little warmth to grip while the steel takes the abuse at the ends. Over time the inserts sit very slightly proud or slightly below the bolster line as humidity moves them, a millimeter at most, and they settle back. That small seasonal movement is the price of a natural material and the reason no molded scale ever feels the same.
The honest downsides
This is a hard steel on a knife you are going to drop. D2 does not bend, it chips, so a tip landed hard on tile is more likely to break a small crescent out than to roll over. Sharpening at home needs diamond or good ceramic; a cheap pull-through will glaze rather than cut. And a bone handled knife is a poor choice for anyone who wants something to abuse in a pocket every day.
Upkeep
Dry the blade whenever it has been in your hands, and give the flats an occasional thin smear of oil if the knife is going into storage rather than daily use. The inserts want nothing at all beyond a dry wipe. If you want to understand how the handles, pivots and latch relate before you start fiddling, how a balisong is put together explains the parts by name.
Common questions
Is D2 rustproof? No. It resists better than a simple carbon blade and worse than a true stainless. Treat it as low maintenance, not no maintenance.
How long before it needs sharpening? Longer than you expect, which is the whole argument for the steel. Strop it and you may go months.
What if I want a patterned blade instead? A Damascus bladed balisong gives you visible layers at a higher price and a different maintenance routine.
