Description

Oak Reaver is a falchion, which is the medieval answer to a question most sword designs dodge: what if you stopped worrying about fencing and just built something that cuts. The blade is broad, single edged and forward weighted, widening toward a clipped tip so the mass sits out where the impact happens. Twenty-four inches overall — short for a sword, and deliberately so. A falchion was a foot soldier’s weapon, not a duellist’s.

Cut from D2 tool steel and taken to a full mirror polish, which on a blade this broad turns the whole flat into a sheet of light. The fittings are as plain as the originals were: a simple curved steel crossguard, a dark oiled oak grip with a steel ferrule at the shoulder, and a plain rounded steel pommel. No brass, no wire, no decoration.

Built for: collectors and anyone who wants a medieval pattern that is honestly a cutting tool. A falchion chops the way a machete wishes it could — the weight is all forward, so the blade does the work and your wrist does not. At 24 inches it also displays easily and handles indoors without taking a lamp out.

On the falchion: it turns up across medieval Europe from the thirteenth century on, always as the practical option — cheaper to make than a longsword, easier to use untrained, and brutally effective at what it did. The shape survives today as the machete and the kukri. This is our interpretation of the classic clipped-tip pattern, not a reproduction of a specific museum piece.

Why D2: a chopping blade takes shock loads on the edge, and a mirror polish shows every chip. D2 runs hard enough to hold the edge through that and is semi-stainless, which matters on a polished surface where the smallest rust spot is visible from across a room.

Care: D2 is semi-stainless, not stainless. Wipe the blade after handling — fingerprints are acidic and a mirror shows them instantly. Keep a light coat of mineral oil on it and clean only with a soft cloth; an abrasive pad turns a mirror to satin in seconds. Feed the oiled oak once a year. Store the sword out of the scabbard.

FAQs

What is a falchion? A medieval single-edged sword with a broad, forward-weighted blade built for cutting rather than thrusting. Think of it as the ancestor of the machete: less elegant than a longsword, considerably better at chopping.

Is 24 inches short for a sword? For a falchion, no — they ran short by design. This is a one-handed cutting weapon, closer in reach to a large machete than to a longsword.

Does it arrive sharp? Yes. If you want it delivered unsharpened for display or reenactment, note it on the order.

Is a scabbard included? Yes — a fitted leather scabbard comes with the sword.

Can it be engraved? Yes — add laser engraving at checkout. A mirror-polished flat this broad is one of the best surfaces we engrave.

Make it a gift: add laser engraving at checkout. Every order ships from Memphis, TN with a lifetime warranty — backed by 2,000+ verified 5-star reviews.
