Description

Philippine deer horn set into brass, with a clip point D2 blade and file work along the spine. No two handles on this model are the same color.

Suits: a buyer who wants a balisong that looks like it came from somewhere. Stag has been the traditional handle material for Filipino knives for a very long time, and it is the reason this one photographs the way it does. It is also the least predictable material we work with, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on your temperament.

Stag is not uniform, on purpose

Deer horn ranges from pale cream to dark amber, with dark crevices where the natural surface texture runs deepest. The piece you receive will land somewhere in that range and will not be a copy of the photograph. The texture is not machined in. Those ridges and pits are the outside of the antler, and they give the handle a purchase that a smooth insert cannot, particularly with wet hands. If you want two knives that look identical, stag is the wrong material.

The clip point and the spine work

A clip point puts the tip lower and closer to the centerline than a spear point does, so it drops into a cut precisely and works well for detail tasks. The trade is a thinner, weaker tip. This is not a knife for prying. The filed notches near the ricasso are a thumb rest, not just decoration; they give you a grip when you choke up for close control.

Care that suits horn

Treat the horn like fingernail, because chemically that is close to what it is. It hates prolonged soaking and it hates dry heat. Wipe it, do not wash it. If it ever looks dull or dry, a small amount of mineral oil massaged over it and buffed away brings the depth back. The D2 blade only needs to be dry. Keep the knife out of the sheath in long storage so nothing sits damp against either material.

Questions we get

Is the horn from a farmed animal? It is sourced as a byproduct, not from animals taken for the material.

Can horn crack? It can, if it dries out badly over years. Occasional oil prevents it.

How light is it? Lighter than the solid brass models, heavier than a stainless frame with bone.

Blade shapes explained is the short version of why a clip point cuts differently, and where the balisong comes from gives the background to the pattern. If you would rather have a stable manufactured insert than a natural one, look at the walnut burl balisong.
