Description

Dyed bone inserts running tan into orange, stainless handles, and a plain spear point in D2. One of the more affordable knives in this family and one of the easiest to live with.

Where it earns its keep: as the balisong you actually handle. Nothing on it is fragile, nothing on it needs a routine, and if you scratch it you will not feel sick about it. If you are buying a first real flipper after a trainer, this is the sensible end of the range.

The spear point

A spear point puts the tip on the centerline with symmetrical grinds on both sides. That makes it strong at the tip compared with a clip point, and it means the knife behaves the same whichever way up you catch it, which is genuinely useful while you are still learning. It is a less specialized shape than a clip or a drop point. It does most things adequately and nothing brilliantly.

How dyed bone behaves

Bone takes dye deeply rather than sitting on the surface, so a scratch shows bone of roughly the same color underneath rather than a pale streak. The gradient across these inserts is a property of how the material took the dye and will differ from piece to piece. Over a few years of handling the color usually settles a shade darker and more even. Strong solvents will lift it, so keep acetone and brake cleaner away from the handles. Soap and water is fine.

Maintenance, which is minimal

Stainless handles and a D2 blade mean this knife tolerates neglect better than most of the range. Rinse it if it gets dirty, dry it properly, and feed each pivot a single drop of oil when the action starts to sound dry. The blade will not rust in normal use. If you store it for a long stretch, leave it out of any sheath and it will be exactly as you left it.

Questions

Is D2 hard to sharpen? Harder than carbon steel. A diamond plate solves it.

Will the dye rub onto my hand? No. It is set into the bone.

Is this a good learner knife? It is, once you are past the trainer stage. It is live and it is sharp.

If you are weighing steels, Damascus versus D2 versus 440C is the direct comparison, and cleaning a folding knife properly covers getting grit out of a pivot. For a warmer, more traditional handle at a step up, see the deer horn and brass balisong.
