Description

This one is a sculpture that happens to open. The blade is cut and textured as a snake: a shaped head at the point with a forked tongue, a red stone set for an eye, and scale patterning chased across the whole flat and carried onto the brass bolsters. Antler panels sit between them. It is the most labour-intensive balisong on our bench and the price says so.

Handle Stag with Brass Engraved Bolster

A big knife, priced for the work in it

Open, this is at the top of the size range built here. Two hands are not optional, the arc of even a simple aerial is noticeably wider, and if everything you have flipped so far was around nine inches the first rollovers will feel slow and top-heavy. The figure on this listing reflects hours rather than steel volume.

Snake blade and cut bolsters

The blade is ground to a serpentine profile rather than a straight spine, which is hand work at every stage and cannot be jigged or repeated exactly. The bolsters are engraved brass, cut rather than cast, and the stag between them is antler with its natural surface texture left in place instead of sanded flat. Your eye goes to the scale texture and the antler grain first; that is where the money went.

Who should buy it

Buy this to own and display, not to learn on. Antler grips well and survives drops better than bone does, but a shaped blade of this length is expensive to have re-profiled if you catch the point on concrete, and there is no cheap way to fix engraving that has been scuffed. For the same stag-and-bolster idea in pattern-welded steel with a straight tanto grind at a considerably lower price, look at the Damascus tanto balisong with stag panels; how D2 measures up against forged pattern steel for edge retention is laid out in the steel comparison.

What D2 brings to a piece like this

D2 carries enough chromium to shrug off the odd humid week and hold a hard, wear-resistant edge for a long time, without being sold to you as stainless. On a knife that will spend most of its life on a stand, that matters mainly as insurance: fingerprints left overnight on a display piece are the usual cause of spotting, and this steel is far more forgiving of that than a plain carbon blade would be. Wipe it down after handling and it stays as it arrived.

Carry and the sheath

It ships in a black leather belt pouch closed by a brass stud, cut and stitched for this frame. The channel is deep enough that the sharpened edge sits down inside the handles when closed and never rides against the panels, which is the detail that separates a properly fitted balisong from one that eats its own scales.

Before you order

Rules on owning a balisong differ from one state to the next and from one country to another, and confirming what applies where you live is the buyer’s job before an order goes in. Legality settled, everything else about this knife happens in Memphis: the forging, the profiling, the texturing, the heat treatment, the fitting of the pivots and the final edge. It carries our lifetime warranty, and if a pivot ever loosens with use we will tighten it rather than sell you a replacement.
