Description

Brass bolsters, near-black ram horn panels left with their natural relief rather than sanded down to a flat, brass pins, and a satin clip point carrying two thumb holes and a short notch cut at the choil. It is the plainest of the brass builds and the one most likely to actually get flipped.

Handle – Brass with ram Horn Inserts

Ram horn in the hand

Ram horn runs darker and denser than antler, and on this model the panels keep the ridged, slightly craggy surface the horn grew with instead of being taken down smooth. That matters more than it sounds like it should. Dry hands grip textured horn better than they grip bare brass, and damp hands grip it a great deal better, which is worth something on a knife you intend to work rather than shelve. The color is near-black with occasional lighter marbling that only shows when the light rakes across it.

Flipping at this size

Handles a little longer than the blade leave a small overhang past the tip, and that quarter inch or so is the margin that keeps a finger clear on a rollover you catch badly. Brass carries enough momentum to pull you through a chained sequence rather than dying halfway, and the overall length is slow enough to forgive a beginner’s timing. The two holes through the blade take a little mass back out again, which stops the whole thing feeling nose-heavy. Tape the edge, then work through the order of moves in our butterfly knife trick progression until the motion is clean before the tape comes off.

The notch at the choil

The small cutout where the edge meets the ricasso is there so a sharpening stone can run off the end of the edge without slamming into the shoulder. It is a detail that costs a minute at the grinder and saves you from an ugly recurve the third or fourth time you sharpen. Speaking of which, tool steel of this type wants a diamond plate rather than a soft stone; the sharpening walkthrough covers angle, pressure and how to tell when you have raised a burr.

Entry point to the brass line

There is no engraving, no filed spine and no exotic panel material in the price, which is exactly why the price is what it is. Everything that matters mechanically is here and nothing that does not is. If you like the ram horn but want a patterned blade beneath it, the Damascus balisong with ram horn inserts is built to the same dimensions and handles identically. You are buying the etch and the layer count in that one, and it asks for more care in return.

Made in Memphis

Blanks cut, drilled, hardened and tempered here, handles fitted and pinned by hand, edge put on last, action tested before packing. Goes out with a black leather carrier, hand-sewn and riveted. Find out how this pattern of knife is treated where you live before buying. Everything we make carries a lifetime guarantee.
