Built around: a working tool steel rather than a decorative one. D2 has no pattern to look at and does not pretend otherwise. What it does is hold an edge far longer than a simple carbon steel, which is a better argument for a knife you intend to use than for one you intend to photograph.
Bone, up close
Undyed bone is not white. It is a pale cream that varies piece to piece and carries faint darker flecks where the marrow structure ran. Polished, it looks closer to old ivory than to plastic, and it is the one handle material here that warms to the touch faster than metal does. It is dense, it is hard, and it is porous at a scale you cannot see, which governs everything about how it should be treated.
D2 against the alternatives
Chromium content puts D2 just under the line that would let anyone call it stainless. It resists corrosion well without being immune to it. Edge retention is the selling point and sharpening is the cost, because the carbides that hold the edge also fight the stone. Budget more time and consider diamond over ceramic. Damascus vs D2 vs 440C vs VG10 sets the four side by side.
A repairable handle
The spec sheet lists the steel and the dimensions and stops there. There is no hardness row on this model, so we will not quote one. What the sheet does tell you is the construction: stainless bolsters with bone pinned between them. An insert built that way can be taken out and replaced. A molded handle cannot.
Care: two materials, two rules. D2 will spot in salt air or under a fingerprint left for a week, so wipe it down and oil it now and then. It needs far less attention than a plain carbon blade and more than a true stainless one. The bone must never go into hot water and must never sit near a heater, because heat drives out what little moisture bone retains and the surface crazes permanently.
FAQs
Will the bone yellow? Slowly, and most owners prefer it that way. It is a surface effect from skin oil and light rather than damage to the material.
What if I want a patterned blade instead? The stag and engraved steel Damascus balisong trades edge retention for figure. For a different natural material on this same tool steel, look at the stag and black resin D2 balisong.
Can an insert be replaced if it cracks? Yes. Pinned inserts come out and go back in, which is one of the quiet advantages of a handle built this way.
