Right for: a buyer who cares more about how a knife is finished than about how much is going on visually. This is the plainest and best proportioned knife in the D2 group.
Figured wood, one piece at a time
The inserts are cut for figure rather than for uniformity, so the piece you receive will have its own arrangement of dark bands running through a red brown ground. Some run tight and parallel. Some cross at an angle and catch the light differently as you turn the knife. There is no way to order a particular pattern and no way to reproduce one, which is either the appeal or the frustration depending on how you shop. Photographs show a representative example, never the individual knife.
D2 at this price
Getting a genuine tool steel into a hand assembled knife at this money means savings were made somewhere, and here they were made in decoration rather than in materials. There is no engraving, no pierced work and no exotic insert. What you are paying for is heat treatment, a clean grind and a handle fitted by someone who cared. If you want to know what that buys against a mass produced blade, hand made against factory made is the comparison.
What you give up
Chiefly, forgiveness. D2 reaches a high hardness and pays for it in toughness, so the tip and the very edge are more brittle than a softer steel would be. Chips happen to people who pry, throw or drop onto stone. Sharpening also demands better abrasives than most households own. And the mirror bolsters, beautiful in a photograph, hold a fingerprint the moment you touch them.
Sharpening it properly
Use diamond or silicon carbide, keep the angle shallow and consistent, and finish with a strop rather than a fine stone; D2 responds well to being deburred and badly to being polished at a rounded angle. Questions before ordering
Will my grain look like the picture? Similar in color, different in pattern. That is inherent to figured timber.
How do I clean the bolsters? Dry microfiber. Anything abrasive will haze the mirror finish permanently.
Where is the ornate end of this range? The engraved Damascus balisong is the opposite of this knife in every respect.
