Handle – Stainless Steel with rose Wood Inserts

Written for: people who find bone and horn too pale and want a handle that reads almost black in a lit room. The wood here is the darkest natural material in the Filipino range.

Rosewood under the thumb

Rosewood is dense enough to sink in water and oily enough that it needs almost no finish to look wet. Under a thumb it feels closer to a polished stone than to timber, and unlike bone it warms to hand temperature within seconds. The grain here is tight and mostly straight, with darker streaks crossing at intervals. It will not shrink noticeably in ordinary indoor conditions, and the natural oils mean a wiped handle stays clean rather than absorbing grime.

Closed, in the pocket, in the hand

Shut, the handles close flush over a blade that fills almost the whole channel, so there is no rattle and very little gap. The latch holds it there. The knife is broad across the blade for its length, which means more steel forward of the pivot than the slim spear point models carry and a swing that feels deliberate rather than quick. Flippers who like an authoritative, slower rollover tend to prefer exactly this profile.

Where it disappoints

The extra width is mass, and mass is fatigue. An hour of practice with this knife is harder work than an hour with a narrow blade. The dark handle also hides nothing about your technique and everything about dirt, so grit collecting at the pivot goes unnoticed until the action turns gritty. And D2 will show surface rust if you store it wet, whatever its reputation suggests.

Keeping the action clean

The maintenance that matters on this knife is not the blade, it is the pivots. Grit works its way in from your hands and the action goes from smooth to notchy over a few weeks of use. Flush each pivot with a drop of thin oil, work the handles a dozen times and wipe the excess away. The wood asks for nothing beyond a dry cloth. If the terminology is unfamiliar, how a balisong is built names the parts.

Questions worth answering

Does the wood need oiling? Rarely. Once a year at most, and only if it looks dry rather than on a schedule.

How does this steel rank? The steel chart puts D2 next to the stainless and carbon grades on hardness and wear.

Is there a horn version of this blade? Yes, the D2 buffalo horn balisong pairs the same steel with translucent horn.
