Description
Ironcross is a knightly longsword — the European high-medieval pattern, thirty-six inches of straight double-edged blade with a narrow fuller running out of the guard and a crisp diamond cross-section carrying the rest of the way to the point. That diamond section is the detail that separates a real longsword from a wall-hanger: it stiffens the blade for the thrust while keeping both edges cutting, and grinding it evenly down three feet of steel is the hardest part of making one of these.
Polished to a mirror. A long straight steel crossguard, plain and heavy, over a two-handed grip wrapped in black leather and divided by steel risers so your hands find their positions without looking. It finishes in a steel disc pommel with an engraved rosette on the face — the one piece of decoration on an otherwise entirely functional sword.

Built for: collectors, HEMA practitioners who want a sharp companion to their trainer, and anyone who wants the sword that most people picture when they hear the word. The two-handed grip and the disc pommel put the balance where a longsword should have it — close enough to the hand that it moves like a tool rather than a lever.
On the fuller and the diamond section: the fuller lightens the blade near the guard where the steel does least work. Where the fuller ends, the diamond section takes over and stiffens the blade toward the point. Together they are why a 36-inch sword can weigh what it does and still handle. Neither has anything to do with blood.
Why D2: a longsword edge takes shock along its whole length, and a mirror finish shows every chip. D2 runs hard enough to hold the edge through hard use and is semi-stainless, which matters a great deal on three feet of polished surface.
Care: D2 is semi-stainless, not stainless. Wipe the blade after every handling — fingerprints are acidic and a mirror shows them from across the room. Keep a light coat of mineral oil on it and clean with a soft cloth only; an abrasive pad turns a mirror to satin in seconds. Feed the leather grip once a year. Store the sword out of the scabbard.
FAQs
Is this a longsword or a bastard sword? The same thing, historically — a straight double-edged sword with a grip long enough for two hands but light enough to use in one. “Hand and a half” is the other name you will see.
Can it be used for HEMA? As a sharp, it is a cutting and display sword rather than a sparring tool — no club will let a sharp on the floor. It is well suited to test cutting, and to sitting on the wall next to the blunt you actually train with.
Is it full tang? Yes — the tang runs the length of the grip and is peened at the pommel, which is how a longsword is meant to be assembled.
Does it arrive sharp? Yes, both edges. If you want it delivered unsharpened for display or reenactment, note it on the order.
Is a scabbard included? Yes — a fitted leather scabbard comes with the sword.
Can it be engraved? Yes — add laser engraving at checkout. The fuller is the traditional place for an inscription.
