Description

Bronze Legion is a gladius, the sword Rome handed to a man standing shoulder to shoulder behind a shield. Twenty-two inches overall — short, because there was no room to swing anything longer in a formation. The blade is a broad leaf shape, double edged, drawn out into a long point.

The grip is dark hardwood, ribbed so the fingers find their spacing without looking. A bronze guard sits at the base of the blade and a large spherical bronze pommel closes the back of the hand. That heavy ball is not decoration; it is what keeps a short, wide blade from feeling nose-heavy.

Where it fits: a collector of Roman military history, or anyone who wants a sword that displays as a compact object rather than a wall fixture. Twenty-two inches is a hand’s reach plus a forearm. It is the shortest sword we make and the only one that reads as a sidearm rather than a two-hand weapon. It hangs on a short wall, sits in a case, and reads as a weapon rather than an ornament.

What a gladius was actually for

It was a stabbing sword. Legionaries fought behind a large shield with almost no lateral space, so the working motion was a short punch forward past the shield edge into the gap. The double edge mattered less than the point, and the wide leaf shape puts mass behind that point without making the sword long. Knife versus dagger geometry makes the same argument at a smaller scale.

Be clear about what this is

The blade is D2 tool steel, chosen for edge retention and wear resistance. It is not the spring-tempered steel that sparring swords are built from, and a sword blade sees loads a knife blade never does. Treat this as a collector and display piece: hang it, handle it, and keep it out of contact drills. It is a sword you own rather than a sword you train with.

Upkeep: D2 carries a lot of chromium but is not stainless, and it will spot if left damp. Wipe it down after handling and put a light oil film on the blade. The bronze will darken over time — that is what bronze does, and most people leave it. Keep the sword out of the scabbard for storage.

FAQs

Is the shield in the photograph included? No. The shield is a prop used for the setting. You receive the sword and its fitted leather scabbard, nothing else.

Can I spar with it? No. Buy a purpose-built sparring blade for that.

Does it come sharp? Yes. Ask at checkout if you want it delivered blunt.

Are the fittings solid bronze? Yes, solid bronze rather than plated steel.

How does D2 compare with your other steels? The knife steel comparison puts the trade-offs together. For the two-handed end of the tradition, see the Ironcross medieval longsword.
