Given to: somebody who has a birthday and a shelf. This is a presentation piece more than a practice piece, which is a statement about the finish rather than about the construction, because the frame, the pinning and the blade are the same as on the working models in this range.

What bolsters tell you about the build

Bolsters are the metal sections at each end of a handle, and how they are made separates a good balisong from a cheap one. Here they are stainless and they carry the pin holes, which means the load from every catch and every drop passes through metal rather than through the insert. A handle where the natural material runs the full length has nothing protecting it. A bolstered handle sacrifices the metal instead, and metal is the part you can replace.

Bone as a gift material

Natural bone reads as considered in a way a synthetic handle does not, and that is why this model exists at its price rather than lower. The cream color goes with anything, the surface is warm in the hand, and it does not date. It also carries a genuine drawback worth saying in advance rather than afterwards: bone is the one material here that carelessness can ruin permanently, and the specific danger is heat.

Making it personal

Engraving is done on our own benches before the knife ships rather than sent out to a service, which matters because a mark cut into a stainless bolster is permanent and there is no second attempt at it. Care: tell the recipient two things and the knife will outlive you both. Never put bone near heat, and never store D2 wet. The blade wants a wipe and an occasional light oil, because a semi-stainless alloy slows corrosion without ruling it out. The bone wants a cloth and nothing else. No oil, no wax, no solvent, and certainly no dishwasher.

FAQs

Is engraving reversible? No. It is cut into the metal, so check the spelling twice before confirming it.

What if the recipient already owns balisongs? Then go for something they will not have. The hand engraved D2 balisong and the Damascus tanto balisong with stag are both less common shapes.

Are the inserts dyed? No. The spec sheet lists plain bone, and the color you see is the material’s own.
