Best for: collectors of the odd corners of balisong history, and anyone who wants a conversation piece that still opens with a proper flip. Please read the note below before you order, because what arrives is a fork.
Read the photograph, not the title
Our product title for this piece calls it a knife. The item pictured, and the item you will receive, is a balisong fork: four flat tines in place of a blade. We are correcting the listing title, and we would rather tell you here than have you open the box surprised. Everything else in the specification stands. If you specifically want a cutting balisong in this steel and this handle combination, take the walnut and stainless butterfly knife instead.
How it flips
Mechanically it is an ordinary balisong. Two handles, two pivot pins, a latch, and the same weight distribution the pattern has always had. The head is lighter than a full blade of the same length, so the swing is a little faster and a little less settled at the end of the arc. Flippers who have trained on a heavy knife notice the difference in the first minute. Because the tines have no edge, it is genuinely safer to learn on than a live blade, which is the main practical argument for owning one. The balisong construction guide covers the pins, latch and channels in detail.
Steel and wood
High carbon steel is not stainless. The tines will spot if they are put away wet, and the gaps between them are exactly the places a towel misses, so dry it properly or accept a patina. The dark wood inserts are set into stainless channels and finished flush. Wood at this density takes hand oil well and darkens gradually toward the pivot end, where it gets touched most. Our listing records the species differently in two places, so we are describing it here simply as the dark hardwood you can see. For the difference between work like this and factory output, see hand forged versus factory made.
Two things people ask
Can I eat with it? The steel is not coated and is fine against food, but wash and dry it by hand every time.
Does it latch closed? Yes, the same latch as our knives, and the tines sit fully inside the channels.
Why does the listing title say knife? A cataloguing error on our side, carried over from the knife version of this pattern. We are fixing it. The specification table and the photograph describe what ships.
