Best for: collectors. This is the most unusual blade shape in our balisong range, and it is bought to be looked at more often than it is bought to be used.
The waved profile
The undulating edge is a kris or flame grind, and it is one of the hardest shapes to execute by hand, because every curve has to be ground symmetrically on both sides and along both edges at once. Historically the shape was meant to widen a wound channel; on a modern piece it is a demonstration of grinding control and nothing else. It also gives the blade more edge length than its measured inches suggest, and every one of those inches has to be sharpened on a curve rather than a flat.
Dagger, not utility
Two edges and a symmetrical point make this a thrusting profile. There is no spine to put your thumb on, which rules out most of the cutting you would do with a normal knife. It changes how you handle it closed as well, because there is no safe handle in the usual sense — both edges face outward whichever handle you grip. Flip it with that in mind, or do not flip it at all and keep it on a stand where it belongs.
Handles
Stainless channels with bone panels set into them. The mottled cream and tan you can see is the natural surface of the material rather than a finish laid over the top, so every panel is different and the pair on your knife will not match the photograph exactly. Bone at this density polishes rather than scuffs, which is why it has outlasted every synthetic that was supposed to replace it.
Care
The blade is carbon steel under a dark finish, and that finish is not a rust barrier. Dry it and oil it after handling. Be careful running a cloth along a double edge — folding a rag over the spine is a habit that does not transfer to this knife, and people learn that the hard way. Bone panels want a wipe and no soaking.
Answers
What is the difference between a knife and a dagger? Two edges and a centered point, mostly. Knife versus dagger goes through it properly.
Why does blade shape matter so much? Because it decides what the knife can and cannot do. See knife blade shapes explained.
What is the conventional version? The BMK-481 single-edge balisong has a normal spine and a plain grind.
