Meant for: flippers who want the weight of a metal-handled balisong without the yellow of brass. Stainless handles are lighter than brass at the same dimensions, so this one moves a little quicker and tires the wrist less over a long session.
Care: the handles are stainless and essentially maintenance-free, but the blade is not. Pattern-welded 1095 and 15N20 is high carbon steel and it will develop spots wherever sweat is left to sit, especially right behind the edge. Wipe it down when you finish. Ram horn is a keratin material with natural grain and layering; it is tough, but it dislikes soaking and prolonged heat, so keep it out of a hot car. If spots do appear, deal with them early rather than letting them pit. Getting marks off carbon steel is straightforward while they are still on the surface.
Stainless handles against brass
The practical difference is weight and upkeep. Brass is denser, so a brass-handled balisong of the same size hits harder through a transition and carries more momentum. Stainless is lighter, stays bright without polishing, and does not take the deep patina some flippers deliberately cultivate. Neither is better. The choice is whether you want a knife that changes with age or one that looks the same in five years.
What ram horn is like
Ram horn has visible layers and a slightly waxy feel that gives decent purchase even when your hands are damp. Each insert is cut from a different horn, so the color banding on yours will not match the photograph, and there may be small natural fissures in the surface. Those are characteristic of the material rather than damage. It ages slowly and darkens where it is handled most.
How to check a forged pattern
Real pattern welding shows the figure on the cut edge and the bevel, not just on the flat, because the layers go through the whole thickness. A printed or laser-etched pattern stops dead where the grind starts. Hold the blade at an angle to a light and look at the bevel: on this knife the pattern continues into it. Spotting a printed pattern is a useful skill in this market. If you would rather have this handle material with a simpler, tougher blade steel, the same horn in D2 costs meaningfully less.
Frequently asked
Will the handles scratch? Yes, stainless marks like any steel. It buffs out with a fine abrasive pad if it bothers you.
Is it a trainer? No. It arrives sharpened and it is a live blade.
Does the horn need oiling? Not routinely. A very occasional wipe of oil keeps it from drying out in a hot climate.
