Description

A slim, symmetrical spear point in satin steel, polished bolsters, and a single unbroken panel of bone down each handle that has already started drifting from white toward honey. It is the quietest-looking knife in this line and, for a lot of buyers, the one that ends up getting carried.

Overall length 9.1 inches
Blade length 4.4 inches
Handle length 4.7 inches
Steel High carbon steel
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle – Stainless Steel with Bone Inserts

Bone is the material that ages where you can watch it

Bone is porous, and porous means it keeps a record of what happens to it. A pale panel moves toward cream, then toward amber, and it moves fastest at the places your fingers cover most, so within a year the handle carries a faint map of how you hold it. Owners either love that or find it maddening, and there is not much middle ground between the two. Bone is also harder and more brittle than horn, which cuts both ways: the inlay holds a crisp, clean line where it meets the steel and will not dent under a thumbnail, but it chips instead of bruising if the knife meets a tile floor from waist height.

The plainest blade shape we grind

A symmetrical spear point puts the tip on the centerline, which is the geometry that behaves most predictably in a fan. Nothing about the profile is trying to be dramatic, and there is no filework, no thumb hole and no swage to catch light. What you get instead is a blade that looks the same from either side while it moves, and a lot of flippers find that easier to read mid-rotation than an asymmetric clip.

The least expensive way onto this bench

Worth being precise about what that does and does not mean. The saving is in the handle material and the simplicity of the fit and finish, not in the steel or the heat treat. If you have been waiting to own something made one at a time rather than stamped out by the thousand, this is the bottom rung of that ladder and the blade is not where the compromise was made. A side-by-side of the common blade steels shows where a carbon blade lands against the alternatives and what each one asks of you in return.

The one habit to build

Carbon steel stored damp will spot, and the first freckles always appear along the edge and around the pivots, because those are the places moisture collects and stays. Catch them inside a week and a cloth deals with it. Leave them a month and you are into proper rust removal with abrasive and patience. For this exact frame and the same bone panels with a blade that is far less bothered by any of it, look at the D2 tool steel version.

Finished in Memphis

Every one is ground, hardened, fitted, sanded, sharpened and worked open and closed by hand before it is packed with a stitched leather belt pouch. Rules on this style differ by state and country, so please check yours. Lifetime warranty included.
