What a mirror polish costs you

A mirror finish on pattern-welded steel takes hours of progressive abrasive work and it looks extraordinary under a light. It is also the least forgiving surface in the shop. Every fingerprint shows. Every wipe with a gritty cloth leaves hairline swirls. If you handle this piece bare-handed and then hang it up without cleaning it, the salt in your fingerprints will etch outlines into the polish within weeks. Cotton gloves are not a fussy suggestion here, they are the maintenance plan.

Built for: display and collection. A wall mount, a stand behind a desk, a martial arts studio. It is a hand-forged traditional build, not a stage prop, and it should be treated with the seriousness that implies.

Handling a twenty-two inch blade

The ten-inch grip is meant for two hands, which is what makes a blade this long controllable at all. Even so, a sword needs clear space above and behind you, and most rooms do not have it. Read the length in the table as a room requirement rather than a spec. Anyone planning to cut with it should get instruction first; there is no safe way to learn edge alignment on your own with a live blade.

Care: oil the full blade every month whether or not it has been handled, working from the guard toward the tip with a clean cloth. Olive burl is dense and oily by nature, so it needs far less attention than a soft wood, but a wax once a year keeps it from drying at the ends. Brass will dull to a soft gold; polish it or leave it, but keep polish compound off the wood. Store it horizontally with the edge up, and never leave it long-term inside a closed scabbard in a humid room.

FAQs

Is it sharp? Yes. It is a functional blade, not a display replica with a dull edge.

Is it suitable for test cutting? Only with training. The Damascus katana guide explains what to check before you swing anything.

What is the mosaic pin? A patterned rod set into the handle, made from bundled metal rods fused and sliced so the end grain shows a design. It is decorative.

What is the smallest thing you make? Something you can put in a pocket, like a small black Damascus neck knife. Storage for either is covered in how to store knives properly.
