Designed to: skin, cape and process game in one knife instead of three, using a deep upswept belly and a broad flat behind it.

What the Nessmuk profile does

Look at the shape: the edge sweeps up hard toward the point and the blade is at its widest about two thirds of the way along. That wide sweep is the skinning section — it lets you draw a long cut with the curve rather than the tip, which is how you separate hide without nicking it. The broad flat behind it gives you a surface to push against for heavier separating work. The one thing this shape is not good at is detail work in a tight space, because the point sits high and out of the way. That is the trade the design makes on purpose. Our Damascus hunting knife guide compares this against drop points and clip points.

Stag, and why no two are alike

The handle is stag antler with a turquoise and black spacer stack at the front and a steel cap at the rear. Antler is a natural material with its own grooves and color, so the piece you receive will not match the photograph exactly. It also grips better wet than any polished material will, which is the practical reason it has been used on hunting knives for as long as it has.

Carrying fourteen ounces

This is a 12 inch, 14 ounce knife and it belongs on a belt, not in a pocket. It comes with a hand-stitched leather sheath with a snap retention strap. Check that snap before a long walk in — leather stretches as it is used, and a slack strap is how knives get left behind on a hillside. If you want something lighter for the same work, the Cottonmouth aero blade runs 7 ounces; if you would rather have a dedicated hook for opening hide, look at the BMK-167 gut hook.

Care: high-carbon Damascus marks quickly when it is put away damp. Wash it, dry it fully including the spacer seams where water sits, and wipe on a light coat of mineral oil. Store it outside the leather sheath. Stag needs almost nothing — a dry brush to get grit out of the grooves is enough, and you should keep it away from prolonged soaking and dry heat, both of which can check natural antler over time.

FAQs

What is a Nessmuk blade? An upswept skinning profile popularized by the outdoor writer George Sears, who wrote as Nessmuk. It trades point access for belly.

Will the antler match the photo? No two pieces of stag are the same. Expect the same character, not the same markings.

Is a sheath included? Yes, hand-stitched leather.
