Made for: caping, skinning and the fiddly part of breaking down an animal, plus the ordinary camp jobs that fill the rest of a trip. The 3.7 inch blade keeps the point under your thumb instead of somewhere out past your knuckles.

What this blade shape does well, and badly

A drop point with this much belly rolls through hide without punching into the gut. That curve is also what makes it slow at anything needing a straight push cut, so it is a poor choice for carving tent stakes or opening feed sacks. Read our guide to skinning knives if you are deciding between this profile and a gut hook. The Vermillion Coil gut hook hunter answers the same job a different way.

Living with stag antler

Antler is not uniform and it is not supposed to be. Yours will have its own crown pattern, its own cream and brown split, and its own set of ridges. Those ridges are the point: a wet hand locks into them far better than it locks into polished wood. Over years the pale areas warm toward honey. Grease and sweat do that, slowly, and the handle looks better for every year of it. The walnut burl spacers darken on the same schedule.

What 7.7 ounces feels like

This is not a light knife for its size. At 8.2 inches overall carrying 7.7 ounces, most of the mass sits behind your hand in the antler and the pommel. The knife wants to hang tip-up when you loosen your grip, which is restful over a long session and slightly awkward if you are used to blade-heavy kitchen knives. If you want to understand how the tang runs through that handle, our notes on full tang versus partial tang cover the trade-offs plainly.

Keeping it right: this is high-carbon pattern-welded steel at 58 to 60 HRC. It will spot if you leave blood or citrus on it. Dry it before it goes away, put a thin film of food-safe oil on the flats every few weeks, and hang the leather sheath somewhere separate. Tanned leather holds moisture against a blade. The antler needs nothing beyond an occasional rub with the same oil.

FAQs

Will my antler look like the one photographed? No. The shape and dimensions are the same, the color and crown texture will be yours alone.

Is 3.7 inches enough for a whitetail? Yes, comfortably. Guides who process several animals a season often prefer a blade this size to anything longer.

Does the brass filework catch on anything? No. It sits on the spine and bolster where your hand does not ride.

I love the knife but if I had anything to say I might have liked a handle like in the pic. Maybe that’s a special order but it is beautiful.
Thank you Mark and your team
