Built for: field dressing and skinning game, camp chores, and collectors who want a genuinely hand-forged blade. The blade profile gives fine control for detail cuts, and the belly carries enough sweep to open an animal without dragging the tip where it should not go.

The steel

Alternating bars of 1095 and 15N20 are welded into one billet, twisted along their length, then cut and stacked again before the final draw. That twist produces the tight concentric eyes running down the flat, a pattern that only appears once acid separates the two alloys. Oil tempering brings the blade to a hardness that skins several animals between touch-ups and still comes back on a plain stone. For the long version, read how Damascus steel is made.

Stag, brass and fit

The grip is a piece of genuine stag antler, picked for good bark texture and left with its natural ridges so it locks up when your hands are wet. Ahead of it sit a polished bone spacer and brass fittings, separated by thin red and black fiber washers, the sort of detail that costs an hour and shows for a lifetime. Antler is a natural material, so the color, the depth of the grooves and the shape of the crown vary from knife to knife. That is the point of it, not a flaw.

Edge and use

The grind runs high and thin behind a sturdy spine, which is the balance a skinner wants: enough steel to lever a joint, little enough to slip under hide without tearing. At nine and a half ounces you feel this knife in the hand rather than forgetting it on your belt, and the mass forward of the guard does most of the work on cape cuts for you. Our skinning knife guide covers technique if this is your first dedicated field blade.

Sheath and upkeep

It ships with a hand-stitched leather sheath, tooled and snapped and cut for a belt. Keep the knife out of that sheath between trips, because tanned leather holds acid and moisture and carbon steel finds both. After a day in the field, rinse the blade, dry it properly, and lay a light film of oil over the etched surface. Spots that do appear lift with a cork and a little oil long before anyone needs abrasives.

FAQs

Is the Damascus real? Yes — hand-forged pattern-welded steel, never a surface print. The 1095 and 15N20 layers are brought out by an acid etch after grinding, and the pattern runs all the way through the bar.

Is every handle different? Yes. Antler is natural and each crown comes off a different animal.

Can it be engraved? Yes. Add laser engraving as a paid option and tell us the initials or date you want.

Giving it to someone: the engraving choice sits at checkout. Made in Memphis, TN and covered by our lifetime warranty, with 2,000+ verified customer reviews and counting.
