Why the handle is longer than the blade

Extra handle length gives you somewhere to move. You can hold it at the front for close control, slide back to the butt for extra leverage on a tough cut, or grip it with gloves on without running out of room. Users with large hands notice the difference immediately. The trade is a knife that looks blade-light in photographs and takes up more sheath space than the cutting edge alone would suggest. Knife anatomy explained is useful if terms like ricasso and butt are new.

Built for: hunters who wear gloves, anyone who has found standard handles cramped, and general camp use where a secure grip matters more than maximum edge length.

What nine and a half ounces buys

It is enough mass to feel deliberate and not so much that your wrist complains. On a five-inch blade that weight sits close to neutral, so the knife neither dives forward nor feels handle-heavy. That neutrality is why it is comfortable for long sessions and unremarkable for chopping. It is a slicer and a controller, not a splitter.

Care: keep an eye on the joint between the handle scales and the tang, because that seam traps water and it is where corrosion starts on any full-tang knife. Dry it there first. The Damascus itself only asks for a light oil film and somewhere dry to live. Sharpening is straightforward at this hardness; a few passes on a fine stone restores the edge long before it gets genuinely dull. The full routine is in Damascus knife care and sharpening.

Not for everyone

If you want maximum blade in minimum package, the ratio here works against you. Somebody who wants a compact, aggressive grip should look at a Damascus karambit, which solves the retention problem in a completely different way.

FAQs

Will it fit a standard belt sheath? It ships with its own fitted sheath. Aftermarket sheaths sized by blade length will be too short for the handle.

Is the handle comfortable in a reverse grip? Yes, and that is one of the benefits of the extra length.

How is the tip for piercing? Adequate but not specialized. This is a general-purpose profile, not a thrusting one.
