Description
Mesa Drifter is the one that looks like late afternoon in cattle country. The high carbon blade is finished in a soft matte grey satin that takes the glare out of desert sun, and the handle is walnut burl — the knotted, swirling part of the tree that no two boards of ever come out the same — brought to a warm honey-brown and set off with brass pins and a steel-lined lanyard hole.
The shape is a working cowboy bull cutter: a deep, square-nosed sheepsfoot with a full 3.5 inch straight edge, no point to snag, and a notched choil so you can choke right up to the blade for close, controlled cuts.

Built for: ranch and stock work, cutting twine, hide and feed sacks, hunting camp, kitchen and carving chores, and everyday belt carry. The burl figure also makes it one of the better-looking bull cutters we build, so it works as a gift as well as a tool.
Care: High carbon steel is not stainless — wipe the blade dry after every use and keep a light film of mineral or camellia oil on it. Walnut burl is a natural wood: clean it with a damp cloth and rub in a little wood wax or oil two or three times a year so it does not dry out. Never put this knife in a dishwasher, and do not store it inside the leather sheath for long periods.
FAQs
What is burl wood?
A burl is a growth on the trunk of a tree where the grain has grown in on itself, producing dense, swirling, knotted figure instead of straight lines. It is rarer than ordinary timber, harder to cut and stabilise, and it is the reason every burl handle is one of a kind.
Will my knife look exactly like the photograph?
No, and that is what makes burl worth having. Walnut burl varies from light honey to deep chocolate, with its own eyes, swirl and figure in every set of scales. Your Mesa Drifter will match the shape, dimensions and build shown, but the handle will be unique to your knife.
Why choose a satin finish over a mirror polish?
A matte grey satin does not flash in sunlight, which matters when you are working close to livestock, and it hides the fine scratches that come with real use.
Is the leather sheath included?
Yes. The tooled leather belt sheath shown ships with the knife at no extra cost. It is stamped by hand, so the tooling varies slightly.
What is the notch in front of the handle for?
That is a choil. It lets you slide your finger forward onto the base of the blade for close work, and it gives the edge a clean place to end when you sharpen it.
