Description
The Frontier Oak is a tomahawk built the way they were before anyone thought to improve on it. The head is hand-forged Damascus, taken to a full mirror polish so the pattern reads as light and shadow rather than texture — tight, flowing lines that run right out to the edge and wrap around the hammer poll on the back. The haft is straight American oak, 19 inches of it, wrapped in brown leather cord below the head where your hand chokes up for detail work. A drilled lanyard hole at the butt takes a leather thong.

Built for: camp work, bushcraft and throwing. The bit is thin enough behind the edge to bite into seasoned wood rather than bounce off it, the head is light enough to swing all afternoon, and the hammer poll drives tent stakes so you are not carrying a mallet as well. Choke up onto the leather wrap for carving and fine splitting; drop back to the butt for felling swings and throws.
On the Damascus: pattern-welded from alternating layers of high-carbon steel, hand-forged, then acid-etched to bring the pattern out and polished back. Every head comes out of the forge with its own pattern — yours will not match the photograph exactly. This is real pattern-welded Damascus, not a laser-etched imitation.
Care: Damascus is high-carbon steel. It will rust if you leave it wet, and it will patina if you let it. Wipe the head dry after use, keep a light film of mineral oil on it, and store the tomahawk somewhere dry. Oil the oak once or twice a year and the haft will outlast you. Check the head for tightness before every session — wood moves with the seasons, and a loose head on any axe is dangerous.
FAQs
Can this tomahawk actually be thrown? Yes — the weight and balance are right for it. Bear in mind that throwing marks any axe, and a mirror-polished Damascus head will show those marks. If throwing is the main use, consider one of our stone-finished axes instead and keep this one for the wall and the woods.
Is the head permanently fixed? The head is friction-fitted and wedged onto the haft in the traditional way, which means it can be re-seated or the haft replaced if it is ever damaged. Check tightness periodically.
Is a leather sheath included? Yes — every tomahawk we build ships with a fitted leather edge sheath, so the bit is covered in transit and in your pack.
Can it be engraved? Yes — add laser engraving at checkout. Engraving on a mirror-polished Damascus head looks exceptional.
