Description

Purple is a difficult color to get right on a knife. Go too dark and it reads black under a lamp; go too bright and it looks like a toy. The Violet Hour handle is poured deep, with pale smoke drifting through the darker amethyst so the block has depth instead of a single flat tone. Crisp white liners run between the resin and the tang, giving the whole handle a drawn outline that makes the shape read cleanly from across a room.

Straight spine, working edge

The blade keeps a flat spine most of its length and then drops to meet the edge near the front. That layout does two useful things. It leaves you a long stretch of spine you can push on with your thumb for controlled cuts, and it puts the tip low, roughly level with your knuckles, which is where you want it for detail work on a board or a bench. The edge below is nearly straight for most of its run with a gentle sweep at the front, so it slices in long draws rather than rocking.

D2 and what it costs you

This is a tool steel, not a kitchen stainless. D2 carries around one and a half percent carbon with a heavy chromium load, which forms hard carbides through the matrix. Those carbides are why the edge lasts through work that would leave a softer alloy blunt, and they are also why you should expect to spend a little longer on a stone when the time comes. Use a coarse diamond plate to set the bevel and finish on ceramic; a soft natural stone will glaze before it cuts. There is a full walkthrough in our guide to sharpening on a whetstone, and a wider look at how the alloys compare in our steel comparison.

It is also worth knowing that D2 is semi-stainless rather than stainless. It resists rust far better than plain carbon but it is not immune, so it does not enjoy sitting wet.

How it gets made

Blanks are cut, ground on belts, heat treated and cryo-cycled, then hand-finished to satin in our Memphis shop. Resin is poured, cured, sawn into scales and shaped against the tang by hand, which is why the transition from steel to handle has no lip you can catch a fingernail on.

Sheath and care

A white leather belt sheath is included, hand-stitched and formed to this blade, with a strap that snaps over the guard so nothing walks out of it while you move.

Towel the steel dry, keep the knife out of the sheath during long storage, and give the flats an occasional wipe of oil if you live somewhere humid. The resin is inert and needs only soap and water. One more thing worth saying: the white liners are not decorative filler. They seal the joint between resin and steel so nothing wicks in along the tang, and they give the shaping a crisp visual edge where two materials meet. For the same color in a folding pocket knife, see the Amethyst Tide.

This exceeded what I pictured in my head before ordering. Handle has a great grip even with wet or gloved hands. This maker clearly takes pride in their work.

Not going to lie. This exceeded my expectations by a lot. Took it out camping right away and it handled everything I threw at it. Leather sheath is thick and well stitched. Not the cheap stuff you usually get. Zero complaints from me on this purchase.

No regrets on this purchase at all. Edge retention has been great even after regular use in the field. Would not hesitate to order again.

This knife looks even better in person than in the listing photos. Proud to support American made goods out of Memphis with this purchase. Steel has a gorgeous pattern that looks different in every light. This has quickly replaced my old go to knife for field dressing. Handle feels amazing and the balance is perfect. If you’re on the fence just get it. You won’t regret it.

Did not expect this level of quality for the price. Weight and balance make it feel like a real working knife not some cheap import. Can’t say enough good things about this purchase.

  8. Grace Mitchell

Didn’t think a knife at this price could feel this premium. Even the small details in the damascus pattern are crisp and clean. Sheath snaps shut securely and doesn’t feel flimsy at all. Every piece of the fit and finish looks hand checked before it shipped. Happy customer here, through and through.
