Description

This is the middle size in the Ranger dagger family, and in practice it is the one most people end up carrying. The large version has presence on a belt but asks for room; the small one disappears into a pocket rig. The medium sits between them with a nine-inch overall footprint, a four-inch double-edged blade, and a handle long enough that a gloved hand still finds all four fingers a home. It was drawn as a limited edition and the run stays small on purpose.

A true dagger profile, not a pointed hunter

Both sides of this blade carry a bevel and both taper to the same centered tip, which is the structural difference that separates a dagger from a general-purpose fixed blade. The symmetry makes the point track straight and keeps the balance neutral instead of blade-forward. If you have never thought about why that geometry exists or where it is a bad idea, our write-up on the difference between a knife and a dagger lays out the trade-offs plainly. Short answer: a dagger is a superb piercing tool and an indifferent slicer, and this one is honest about that.

Damascus with real layer count

The billet is 1095 alternated with 15N20, folded out to a layer count in the hundreds and then etched so the two alloys separate into light and dark bands. Nickel in the 15N20 resists the acid, the higher-carbon 1095 darkens, and the pattern you see is a cross-section of the actual folds rather than a surface treatment. We explain what those numbers really buy you in our piece on layer counts. Hardened and drawn in oil to a working range that keeps the thin dagger tip from going brittle, which matters far more on this shape than on a thick camp blade.

Handle and fittings

Hardwood scales, warm reddish-brown with straight open grain, pinned through a polished steel bolster and capped at the butt. The scales are shaped with a gentle swell at the palm so the hand indexes without needing to look. Nothing about it is aggressive or textured; a dagger this size is meant to be held with control rather than gripped hard.

What ships and how to look after it

A black leather belt sheath with pale contrast stitching comes with the knife, cut and sewn to this blade rather than pulled from a bin of blanks. Everything is done at our bench in Memphis, Tennessee, from grinding through etch and final assembly.

Carbon Damascus wants attention that stainless does not. Handle it, then run a dry cloth down the flats before it goes away. Camellia or a light gun oil, brushed on with a fingertip every few weeks, is plenty. Leather holds moisture, so for long storage keep the knife out of the sheath and lay it on a shelf instead. If a haze of rust ever does appear, it lifts off easily and we walk through how without wrecking the etch. If the proportions are not quite right for you, the full-size Ranger dagger covers the same idea with more blade.
