This set is for: someone building practice hours, or someone kitting out a group. Four knives means you can hand one to a friend, keep one at the desk and leave one in the bag without ever being without a knife to drill with.
Four knives, four different feels
The set is deliberately not four copies. The profiles range from a compact knife that disappears in a fist to a long tanto with real reach, and the weight and swing change accordingly. Practicing across the range is genuinely useful: a trick learned only on one knife often falls apart on another, and rotating between sizes teaches your hand to read momentum rather than memorize a single rhythm. It also means one of the four will end up being the one you actually carry.
Skeletonized handles, and the tradeoff
Drilling the handles out removes weight where it does the most good, keeping the knives light enough for long sessions without making them feel hollow. The holes also let you see and reach the pivots for cleaning, which is a real advantage over a closed handle. What you lose is comfort. Bare drilled steel has edges around every hole, and an hour of hard practice will leave marks on your fingers that a bone or wood insert would have prevented. Tape is the usual answer. How handle constructions differ explains why.
Buying a set rather than one knife
The economics work if you will use all four. If you want one good knife, this is the wrong purchase, because a set of four at this price cannot carry the fit and finish of a single knife at a comparable cost per piece. Think of it as practice hardware rather than as four collectibles.
Keeping four knives running
These are forged from carbon steel and the handles are steel too, so there is nothing here that resists moisture on its own. The routine that works is batching it: once a month, wipe all four down, run a drop of oil through every pivot, work each one open and closed a dozen times and wipe off what comes out. Skeletonized handles make this quick because you can see what you are doing. Beginner tricks will tell you which drills to put the hours into.
Answers
Are these trainers or live blades? They are sold as a practice and trainer set. Check the edge on each one yourself before you drill with it, and treat every balisong as capable of cutting you.
Are all four identical? No. The set covers several sizes and blade profiles rather than four of the same knife.
What is the traditional alternative? A single stag handled Filipino balisong is a very different object.
