Description

A silver-washed Filipino balisong with a 12 cm blade and a pair of skeletonized steel handles. Nothing on it is decorative for its own sake.

Put it to work: flipping practice and light utility cutting. The milled slots drop weight out of the handles without narrowing the grip, so the knife swings quicker than its size suggests and still fills an adult hand. If you want a display piece with inlaid scales, this is the wrong knife. This one is built to be handled.

Blade length 12 cm
Steel High carbon steel
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle – High Carbon Steel

What the skeletonized handles change

Cutting metal out of the handle channels moves mass back toward the pivots. That shortens the arc you drive through on a rollover and makes the knife feel faster on the return. The trade is bite. Open steel edges press into your fingers harder than bone or wood inserts do over a long session. Most people adapt inside a week. Some never like it, and that is worth knowing before you order.

The silver wash

The finish is a uniform bright gray with no figure in it. It hides small scuffs better than a mirror polish and it does not hold fingerprints the way a polished flat does. Expect it to dull slightly and evenly across the flats as the knife gets used. That is the finish wearing in, not failing.

Living with it

Keep the blade dry. Clean it off once you have finished handling it, especially if your hands run damp, then pass a cloth with a trace of light machine oil over the flats before it goes in a drawer. The pivots want one drop, not a flood. Excess oil collects grit and turns a smooth action gritty. If the latch starts to rattle, the pivot screws have backed off. Snug them a quarter turn at a time until the play is gone without binding the swing.

Questions buyers ask

Is 12 cm too much blade for learning? It is more than a trainer, and a long blade punishes a bad catch. Drill the basic openings on something dull first, then move here.

Will the handles mark up? Yes. Steel against steel leaves witness lines at the tang and the latch. They appear in the first month and then largely stop.

Can the action be tuned? Yes. The pivot screws are accessible and this knife is meant to be adjusted rather than left exactly as shipped.

For the reasoning behind open-channel construction, read channel versus skeletonized handles, and basic balisong openings covers the first moves worth drilling. For the opposite build, warm wood filling the same frame, see the kamagong and brass balisong.
