Handles well for: close work. Four and a half inches of blade in a symmetrical spear point, 8.4 ounces overall, and a handle short enough that your hand sits right behind the edge where the control is.

Stabilized bone versus plain bone

Untreated bone dries, yellows and eventually cracks along its length. Stabilizing means the material is impregnated with resin under pressure until the pores are full, which stops it moving with humidity and stops it absorbing whatever it touches. It also makes it harder, so it takes a polish and holds it. Plain bone is cheaper and looks similar on day one. The difference shows up in year five.

What a spear point does well

The edge and the spine curve toward the tip at roughly the same rate, which puts the point on the centerline of the blade. That makes it strong, because the steel behind the tip is thick on both sides, and it makes the knife predictable when you pierce something. What you lose is belly: there is less curved edge for a long slicing draw than a drop point gives you. Our blade shapes guide compares the two directly.

The sheath, and where the knife lives

Red leather, tooled and stitched by hand. It is a carry sheath, not a storage case: leather holds humidity against steel, and a knife left in one for a season will show for it. Keep it on a rack, in a drawer with a cloth, or in a case. There is a short piece on storing knives properly if you have several.

Day to day: The blade is bare polished steel and it will spot if you leave it wet. Dry it, then oil it lightly before it goes in the drawer. The stabilized bone is sealed and needs nothing beyond a wipe; do not soak it and do not put it near a heat vent, which is the one thing that will still move it. Wash by hand, never in a dishwasher.

Things worth knowing

Is the bone dyed? No. The pale color is the natural material after stabilizing. Small variations in tone between the two scales are normal.

Would this work for hunting? For dressing and caping, yes. The spear point pierces cleanly and the size suits close work. If you specifically want a gut hook, the Chihuahuan gut hook hunter is built for that job.

Can I get it without the red sheath? The red sheath is what ships with it. Sheath color is fixed for this model.
