Description

Twin Forge is two tomahawks built to argue with each other. One carries a layered Damascus head with a twisted rose pattern etched across it, on a light hickory haft under a brown leather wrap. The other carries a high carbon head in a dark matte forge finish with one bright hand-ground bevel, on a dark stained ash haft under black paracord. Both are 19 inches.

Damascus Rose Damascus steel head with a twisted rose pattern, polished to a bright mirror. Light hickory haft with a brown leather wrap.
Dark Forge High carbon steel head in a dark matte forge finish with a hand-ground bright bevel. Dark stained ash haft with a black paracord wrap.
Handle Hickory haft under a brown leather wrap, and a stained ash haft under black paracord

Two tools, two jobs: the Damascus hawk is the one you keep clean — camp work, display, the one you hand people to look at. The forge-finished one is the one you abuse, because a matte surface hides what a hard day does to it.

How both heads are hung, and how to re-seat them

Neither head is wedged or glued. Each haft is tapered, and the head is driven up that taper from the butt end until the wood jams against the walls of the eye; every swing seats it further. Because the fit follows the weather, test each one by twisting the head against its haft before use. Any play at all, and you re-seat it: invert the hawk and drive the butt of the haft onto a hard surface until the head climbs the taper and stops moving. Two failed attempts means that haft is spent.

Hickory against ash

These are the two classic tool-handle woods and they feel different. Hickory is denser and absorbs shock exceptionally well, which is why American axe handles have been made from it for two centuries. Ash is lighter and springier, the European standard for the same job, and it makes a hawk of identical size feel quicker in the hand at the cost of a little mass behind the head. Pick by feel. If you are weighing the layered head against the plain one, read how to tell real Damascus from a printed pattern first.

Care: Both heads are carbon steel and both rust if put away wet, so dry them and keep oil on the steel. Do not polish the etched head; the contrast is a shallow surface etch. The dark forge finish will lighten where it wears, which is normal. Oil the hickory and the ash annually. The Damascus care guide has the detail.

FAQs

Can I take only one? Either hawk sells alone, and the pair together is priced below the two singles. Each ships with its own leather head cover.

Which one should I throw? The forge-finished one. Marks vanish into a matte surface and stand out badly on an etched head.

Are the two heads the same shape? Same size and format, different heads — one layered and etched, one forged plain with a ground bevel. Companions, not twins.

Is there a set built for throwing? Triple Strike is three identical full-tang hawks made for it, with nothing hung that can loosen.
