Description

Emerald Crescent is a kilij, the Turkish cavalry sword, built to show what a kilij is really about. Thirty inches overall, deeply curved, with the back of the blade widening into a broad flare in the last stretch before the point. That flare is the yelman, and it separates a kilij from every other curved sword.

The steel is hand-forged Damascus in a feather pattern, high polished, with a narrow fuller along the spine. The grip is green stabilized wood set with silver rivets. The crossguard is hand engraved silver with downturned quillons and langets running onto the blade, and the pommel cap is engraved to match.

Who buys this one: collectors, and people buying a landmark gift. It is the most decorated sword we make in this group and the least pretending to be anything else. The engraving, the feather pattern and the optional walnut box all point the same way — made to be displayed and handed over.

What the yelman actually does

The widening at the back of the blade moves mass forward and outward, past the axis you swing around. On horseback that mattered: it let a rider put weight into a cut without a long, heavy blade. It also shifts the balance toward the tip, which is why a kilij feels front-loaded.

Feather pattern Damascus

Feather is one of the harder patterns to produce. The billet is split and folded so the layers open outward from a central line, and the result reads like the vane of a feather down the blade. It cannot be faked convincingly at this scale, which matters given how much printed steel is on the market — real versus printed Damascus covers what to look for, and how Damascus is forged explains where the figure comes from.

Silver fittings and the presentation box

The crossguard, rivets and pommel cap are hand engraved rather than cast with a pattern, so the cut lines vary slightly from piece to piece. The langets are the two tongues extending from the guard onto the flat of the blade; they steady the blade in the fitting and are a genuine kilij feature rather than an addition. Green stabilized wood is timber that has been resin-impregnated under vacuum, which is what stops a grip this slender from moving with the seasons. The walnut presentation box with green velvet lining is an option at checkout rather than standard equipment.

What it needs: hand-forged Damascus is high carbon and will rust if neglected. Wipe the blade after every handling and keep a light coat of mineral oil on it. Silver fittings tarnish over time and a silver cloth restores them. Keep abrasive polish away from the engraving, which would soften the cut lines. Store it dry and out of any sheath.

FAQs

Is the presentation box included? No — it is an option you add at checkout.

Are the fittings engraved by hand? Yes, individually, rather than stamped with a pattern.

What are the langets? The two tongues extending from the guard onto the flat of the blade. They steady the blade in the fitting and are a genuine kilij feature.

Will my pattern match the photograph? Same pattern type, its own figure. Feather Damascus never repeats.

What is the closest alternative? The Desert Sultan Arabian scimitar is the same length with a continuous curve and no yelman.

Make it a gift: add laser engraving at checkout, and consider the walnut box. Every order ships from Memphis, TN with a lifetime warranty — backed by 2,000+ verified customer reviews.
