Description

Some knives are meant to be noticed. The Linen Frost is meant to be carried. Ivory canvas Micarta, a stonewashed blade the color of wet slate, and blue anodized hardware are the only three notes in it, and they are quiet ones. Closed, it is four inches and slim enough that it does not print through a pocket.

Why a wharncliffe

The edge is straight from heel to tip and the spine slopes down to meet it, so the point sits at the very bottom of the blade. Three things follow. Your cut lands exactly where you aim it, because a straight edge does not roll away from the material. Every part of the edge cuts at the same angle, so there is no dead zone. And the low tip lets you get under a staple, a stitch or a strip of tape without lifting your hand. For opening packages, breaking down cardboard, trimming line and cutting things flat on a table, nothing beats it.

This is a fine-grained Scandinavian stainless developed specifically for thin, hard-used edges. It takes a very keen edge at high hardness, it comes back quickly on a stone or a ceramic rod, and it holds up against moisture and salt far better than a tool steel does. If you carry a knife in a coat pocket through winter, or you live near the coast, it is the sensible alloy. The stonewashed finish adds a second layer of practicality: it is tumbled so the surface is a field of tiny random marks, and new scratches simply blend in instead of standing out. The handle and the frame

Ivory canvas Micarta is woven cloth cured in resin, then ground back so the weave shows as a fine linen texture. It gains grip when wet, it takes an oil patina from your hands over the years, and it will not chip like a brittle composite. Steel liners underneath give the frame rigidity and one of them forms the lock. The pivot runs on phosphor bronze washers, and the blue anodized titanium clip carries the knife tip-up.

Weight and pocket manners

The whole knife is light enough to forget about, and the frame is slim because the liners are milled rather than left as thick plate. There is no assist spring taking up room inside the handle, which is part of why it sits so flat. The clip tension is set firm enough to survive a day of getting in and out of a car and loose enough that you are not fighting the fabric.

Grinding, heat treat, assembly, the leather slip pouch: all of it in our Memphis, Tennessee shop, assembled and edge-tested by hand before it ships.

Because the steel is stainless, upkeep is genuinely light. Rinse the blade if it gets sticky, dry it, and put a drop of oil on the pivot every month or two. Check the pivot screw occasionally with the right driver rather than a knife tip. Do not soak it; water in a closed handle is what causes trouble.
