Description

Opening morning arrives whether or not your gear is ready. Harvest Moon is built for the hour after a good shot, when the light is going, your hands are cold, and the last thing you want is a knife that argues with you. Nine inches overall, a four and a half inch polished D2 drop point with a gut hook cut into the spine, olive wood scales, a brass bolster and a brown leather belt sheath.

What the hook is for

The gut hook is a small crescent of sharpened steel set into the top of the blade near the tip. Its job is one specific cut: opening the abdominal wall from the inside out, running under the hide, with the hook doing the slicing while its rounded back rides against the paunch and keeps the point away from anything you would rather not open. Done properly it takes seconds and stays clean. Done with a plain blade tip it takes concentration and a steady wrist, and it is where most people make the mess. If you have never used one, our explainer on gut hook knives walks through the technique and the sharpening, which is the part people ask about second.

Behind the hook, the rest of the blade is a proper drop point — a lowered tip with a strong belly for skinning, enough flat for caping and quartering, and a spine thick enough to lean on. One knife covers the whole sequence.

D2, polished bright

D2 belongs to the die steel family: plenty of carbon, roughly twelve percent chromium, and a matrix crowded with hard carbides. On a hunting blade that translates into real staying power through hide, hair, and the grit that comes with them. Around twelve percent chromium gives it good corrosion resistance for field work without making it a stainless, so it does still want drying. We finish this one in a high satin polish rather than a matte, which is a deliberate choice: a smooth, tightly polished surface has fewer places for blood and fat to key into, and it wipes down faster at the truck.

Olive wood and brass

Olive is one of the best handle woods there is and it is not used more often only because the pieces are small. It is dense, oily, and dimensionally stable, with a caramel and gold grain that swirls rather than runs straight. Wet hands do not make it slick the way a varnished hardwood does, and it warms to your palm within a minute. The scales here are contoured with a swell through the middle and thinned at the butt, so the knife indexes without you looking at it. A solid brass bolster with a thin red spacer sits at the front, the tang runs full length, and a lanyard hole is drilled through the pommel. Brass will dull to a soft gold with handling; most people prefer it that way inside a season.

Sheath and stablemates

The sheath is brown leather, hand-stitched, wet-formed, held shut by a strap and snap across the handle, on a wide belt loop. It rides high enough not to catch when you kneel. Hunters who want the same platform in olive wood with a matte working finish should look at the Thicket Warden, which shares the steel and the profile.

After the season

Clean it the same day. Warm water and dish soap, a soft brush inside the hook where tissue likes to sit, then dry it thoroughly — the hook is the spot people miss and the spot that spots first. Put a thin coat of oil on the blade before it goes into storage, and store it outside the leather so nothing sits damp against the steel. The olive wood takes a wipe of mineral oil once a year and looks new again. Take the main bevel back on a stone at whatever angle it arrived with, and use a small round ceramic rod or a length of dowel wrapped in fine paper to bring the hook back — it needs less attention than you would think, but it does need some.
