Description
Hairstreak is a two-knife set, and the pair is deliberately not a matched pair. One carries a straight-ground point with a flat, angular tip; the other is the snake blade the model is known for, a long serpentine profile that waves along its whole length and finishes in a rounded belly. Fanned together they read as one object rather than two copies.
| Blade length | 12 cm |
| Steel | Hand-forged high-carbon steel |
| Handle | – High Carbon Steel |
No pattern, and that is a decision
There is no layered figure on either blade. Both are worked from a single hand-forged high carbon bar, straight through, with no billet stack and no acid work to protect afterwards. Plenty of flippers actively prefer this. Nothing on the flats can scuff into visibility, nothing fades at the contact points your fingers land on every single rotation, and when the finish eventually looks tired you can take abrasive to it and bring it back rather than working delicately around figure you are trying not to erase.
The serpentine profile changes sharpening
That waving edge is most of the appeal and all of the extra work. A flat bench stone only reaches the crests of the curves; the belly inside each hollow needs a round rod, a slipstone, or the corner of a stone worked slowly and deliberately. Budget two or three times as long as a straight edge would take, and do not be tempted to force the profile flat to make the job easier, because once the waves are gone they are gone. The straight-pointed knife in the set sharpens conventionally and makes a good place to practice your angle first.
Rust is the real maintenance item
Unlayered carbon steel with no coating over it is the most reactive combination we sell. Fingerprints left on a blade overnight in a humid room will be visible in the morning. That is not a flaw, it is simply what this steel is, but it does mean that a wipe and a thin film of oil after handling stops being optional. Catch orange freckling in its first week and taking rust off a blade is a ten-minute job with a cloth. Ignore it for a month and you are looking at a refinish instead.
Built here, shipped ready to work
Both knives are profiled, drilled, hardened, fitted and sharpened in Memphis, then checked open and closed by hand before they go into the box beside a riveted black leather carrier. If you would rather have visible layered figure than plain polished steel, the Silver-spotted runs the same blade length in a clip point. New to the fan-and-roll work these profiles were ground for? Tape the edges and start with the foundation balisong tricks before you take the tape off.
